The complex charges build up with time developed in thunderstorms leads to both upward and downward lightning discharges, including intra-cloud, cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-air, cloud-to-ionosphere and cloud-to- ground lightning discharges.

The validation results show that the hardware and the software algorithm of the on-board observation system can effectively detect the TLEs and obtain the images during the on-orbit operation.

Based on the analysis of the spectral and temporal properties of the TLEs, the randomly generated UV LED pulses are opted for verification scenarios for the TLE observation system.

To this end, a ground simulation facility is constructed to emulate the space environment of the TLE occurrence using a set of UV LEDs inside a darkbox. The purpose of this study is to investigate the functionality of the hardware and the validity of the software algorithm to show the on-board system will operate properly with no human intervention during the space operation. By taking into account the limited resources of a small CubeSat in size and power, the on-board observation system is developed employing a system-on-chip design architecture by which both hardware and software can be integrated seamlessly. Also, a distinctive TLE observation software which enables detecting the TLEs and capturing images in a timely manner is devised.

An on-board TLE observation system of the VisionCube cubesat is designed and developed by incorporating a photon-sensitive MaPMT and a CMOS image sensor. Ībstract: The VisionCube is a 2-unit CubeSat developed in-house, of which the primary mission is aimed at detecting the occurrence of transient luminous events in the upper atmosphere and obtaining corresponding images from the low Earth orbit. Blue jets, on the other hand, consisting of leaders and a return stroke are discharges propagating upwards into the stratosphere from the top of the cloud like the same way of that of the lightning but they may or may not be associated with cloud to ground lightning activity whereas, Elves, another category of TLE, are concentric rings of optical emissions escaping horizontally outwards at the bottom edge of ionosphere, formed by the electromagnetic pulse radiated by the cloud-to- ground discharge current. Sprites, possessing huge amount of charge, are induced by positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) lightning strokes. Amongst TLEs, sprites are frequently observed phenomena. and are usually associated with thunderstorms rousing at high altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere. These discharges are occasionally associated with Optical emissions commonly called Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), identified as sprites, elves, jets, blue starters, etc. The complex charges build up with time developed in thunderstorms leads to both upward and downward lightning discharges. Verification of the obtained TLEs data will be carried out by comparing them with data recorded by Department of Meteorology Malaysia.

The event is being traced using amplified antenna with noise filter and a data acquisition (DAQ) module used to interface between antennas and personal computer (PC) aided with online data logging device to perform a live characteristic recording through PC software. Experimental studies are made to observe Elves and Sprites in Malaysia partially in Pekan, Pahang. There are various types of TLEs such as Elves, Sprites, Halos, Blue Jets, and Gigantic Jets that differs in height within atmosphere.

This paper reveals a study to verify the occurrences possibility of TLEs in Malaysia by selecting a simple and suitable device to detect and capture the event. So, a high frame rate capturing device is required in order to capture the scenes of TLEs.

It is a very fast event that is hardly seen by the naked eyes and happened in a very short period of time. Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) are classified as a type of lightning events that occurs above a thunderstorm.
